I Could Write Books

One day, I will write about powerful women.

I will write about Rosa
That woman who gave birth to me
Who broke her back in a muhindi factory
To make ends meet for her brood of five
That God-fearing woman
Who prayed life-changing prayers
Whose legacy is God-loving children
That educated woman
Who did everything to school her children
To give us an equal chance at life
That tough woman
Who never let anything stop her
Who taught her children that nothing can stop them

I will write about Mildred
The eldest of the brood
Made a mother for us so early
That compassionate woman
Who’s never once turned her back
On the ‘children’ death handed her
That generous woman
Who’s sacrificed so many of her dreams
To see ours come to pass
That determined woman
Always pushing forward
Making the best of everything life brings

I will write about Faith
That woman who took my heart
The love of my life, my companion, my friend
The dream I used to dream about
That Godly woman
Who loves God in such simple and profound ways
The way I desire to do
That beautiful woman
Who carries herself with grace and ease
Unassuming in drop dead gorgeousness
That smart and passionate woman
Accomplished in knowledge and wit
With a heart-deep love for people and justice
And for this so-so of a man she agreed to marry

I could write books about these women and more still, on whose shoulders I have stood and still do. Today, though, I am grateful, and I celebrate them.
